Sweden open Nations League campaign with Romania win
Isak and Gyökeres secure a 2–1 victory in Solna.
Sweden began their Nations League campaign with a 2–1 victory over Romania at Strawberry Arena on 25 September 2026. Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres scored in the first half as Graham Potter’s side collected three opening points.
Isak gave Sweden the lead in the 20th minute, before Dennis Man equalised for Romania nine minutes later. The hosts moved back in front shortly before the interval when Lucas Bergvall’s shot produced a rebound and Gyökeres converted in the 43rd minute.
Sweden exerted greater control after the break. Elliot Stroud came close to extending the lead and subsequently put the ball into the net, but that effort was ruled out after a video review identified a handball by Isak earlier in the move.
The evening also brought concern for Emil Holm, who left the field injured after approximately an hour and was replaced by Daniel Svensson. Sweden protected their advantage through the remaining minutes.
The result gave the hosts a winning start in Group B4 ahead of their next home fixture against Poland.
